Growing tomato plants in a Topsy Turvy eliminates the threats from pests like cutworms, ground insects, ground fungus and rodents.
How to plant your Topsy Turvy:
Take a temporary nylon or cotton cord and hang the TOPSY gro-bag at waist height.
Take your bedding plant out of its nursery tray and gently shake the loose soil off its roots.
With your hand inside the bag, remove the split sponge from the plastic base in the bottom of the bag.
Holding the spilt open and apart, put the roots of your plant UPSIDE DOWN up through the hole in the bottom of the Topsy Turvy. Take great care not to bend, break or otherwise damage the stem, as tomato stems are fragile.
Capture the plant stem inside the split sponge, centering it as best you can. Allow as much of the stem to go up inside the bag as possible, as the tomato plant will sprout roots all along its stem!
Carefully press the sponge firmly and fully back down into the shelf at the bottomw of the Topsy Turvy gro-bag.
Very slowly, fill the bag with high quality potting soil, being careful not to damage the plant, keeping the plant's upside down root ball centered in the bag.
When you have filled one third of the bag, stop and place on top of the soil one of the styrofoam disks that came with your Topsy Turvy.
Continue slowly filling the bag with high quality potting soil.
When you have filled two thirds of the bag, stop and place on top of the soil the other styrofoam disk that came with your Topsy Turvy.
Continue slowly filling with soil until there are 2-3 inches of air space at the top.
To hang the Topsy Turvy, use the furnished screw eye into at least 2"x4" solid wood or just hang it from a tree or post. Shepard hooks are NOT recommended as they will bend over time. When the plant is mature, it will weigh over 30 pounds! Yum.
Once hung, it is time to feed and water. Feed and water your plant through the Topsy Turvy's top funnel.
Important Advice
Plants in containers require more frequent watering than plants on the ground.
When large and loaded with tomatoes, you will need to water your plant at least EVERY OTHER DAY!
If your environment is over 85°F, provide some shade for your plant or it will not blossom or pollen. No blossoms nor pollen equals no tomatoes. :(
Tomatoes that develop a black rotten circle at the bottom are suffering from a lack of calcium sulfite. This is nearly always caused by uneven watering, so water your plants consistently or your tomatoes will suffer!
Did I mention consistent watering? Tomatoes are 85% water, so water that plant, you lazy weasel! :)
If you like many small tomatoes, let your plant grow without much suckering or trimming.
If you want fewer bigger tomatoes, wait until your tomatoes are dime-sized and then snip off stems that are not blossoming, pollenating or growing fruit. This concentrates the water and nutrients into the branches holding the tomatoes. Yum!
Little tastes better with a tomato than buffalo mozzarella. Ask your cheese monger for some!
